AGBOR: A 72-year-old man has reportedly lost his life after attempting to ride his motorcycle through floodwaters during a heavy downpour in Boji-Boji Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The deceased, identified as Mr. Sunday Azimeyekagbon, popularly known as Sunny, was said to be from Ozanogogo Community in Ika South LGA.
According to eyewitnesses, the tragic incident occurred on Wednesday when a prolonged and intense rainfall caused severe flooding across Boji-Boji Agbor and its surrounding communities.
Despite the dangerous conditions, Mr. Azimeyekagbon reportedly attempted to ride his motorcycle through the flooded road but was overwhelmed by the floodwaters.
His body was later recovered and deposited at the General Hospital, Agbor, Mortuary, where it awaits further arrangements by his family.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns among residents over the persistent flooding and unchecked erosion that have plagued Boji-Boji Agbor for many years. Some residents blamed successive governments for failing to provide lasting drainage infrastructure and flood-control measures, arguing that the recurring floods continue to endanger lives and property. Others, however, questioned why the deceased ventured out on his motorcycle despite the heavy rainfall and obvious flooding.
Boji-Boji Agbor has long been identified as one of the flood-prone areas in Delta State, with residents experiencing severe flooding during the rainy season. Reports indicate that a similar flooding incident claimed the life of another resident in the community last year, underscoring the urgent need for improved drainage systems and effective environmental management.
Residents have appealed to the Delta State Government and relevant authorities to take immediate steps to address the recurring flooding and erosion problems in the area to prevent further loss of lives.
Members of the public have also been advised to remain indoors and avoid driving or walking through flooded roads during heavy rainfall, as floodwaters can be deeper and more dangerous than they appear.
May the soul of Mr. Sunday Azimeyekagbon rest in peace, and may his family find the strength to bear this painful loss.
