A new political assessment has identified former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Victor Ochei, as the frontrunner for the All-Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial ticket in Delta North ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The report, released by public affairs analyst Omobola Itaye, projects a highly competitive contest involving key political figures, including former governor Ifeanyi Okowa and incumbent senator Ned Nwoko.
According to the assessment, the race is shaping up as a high-stakes political battle within All Progressives Congress (APC), reflecting broader debates about the future of politics in the Anioma region of Delta North.
Ochei is said to hold a strategic edge due to his growing grassroots support and increasing popularity among younger voters. The report also highlights his experience as Speaker, where he was credited with legislative competence and an ability to build consensus.
While acknowledging Okowa’s extensive political résumé—including roles as commissioner, Secretary to the State Government, senator, and two-term governor the report notes concern among some stakeholders about perceived dominance and centralization of influence during his tenure. It also points to ongoing scrutiny by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as a potential factor in shaping public perception.
Senator Nwoko, on the other hand, is described as an issue-driven politician, particularly noted for his advocacy on malaria eradication and diaspora engagement.
However, the report suggests that his political structure operates somewhat outside the traditional power base in the state, which could affect his chances of clinching the APC ticket.
In contrast, Ochei is portrayed as a middle-ground candidate, combining political experience with a reform-oriented outlook. His positioning within the established political structure, the report notes, has enabled him to attract support across different blocs.
The analysis also links the evolving contest to broader political realignments in Delta State under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, with increasing calls for inclusiveness and equitable power distribution shaping voter sentiment.
Ultimately, the report concludes that the outcome of the Delta North APC senatorial race may hinge on whether voters opt for continuity represented by established figures or a shift toward a more inclusive and balanced political direction.
