LAGOS: Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as a suitable successor for the 2027 Lagos State governorship election.
Sanwo-Olu described Hamzat as “fit, prepared and capable” to lead the state, citing their years of working relationship as evidence of his competence and readiness for higher responsibility.
The endorsement followed a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally informed members of the State Executive Council and leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of his intention to contest the governorship seat.
A video from the meeting, which has since gone viral, captured the governor lifting Hamzat’s hand after offering prayers, drawing applause from those in attendance.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu said stakeholders unanimously agreed on Hamzat’s suitability for the role.
We received Mr Deputy, who came with a strong delegation to formally declare his intention. It was a unanimous decision that he is fit and well-prepared for the job,” the governor said.
He understands the system, knows how governance works, and has demonstrated integrity, loyalty, commitment and support at the highest level.
Sanwo-Olu added that he felt honoured by Hamzat’s decision to formally notify him and the leadership of his ambition.
The governor also noted that the meeting reflected a consensus among party leaders, describing it as a “family discussion that ended with broad support for Hamzat’s aspiration.
He further acknowledged the role of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in shaping the political structure that has produced leaders within the state.
The endorsement signals early positioning within the Lagos APC ahead of the 2027 elections, as political alignments continue to take shape.
