Dickson: INEC Capable of Nationwide Electronic Transmission of Election Results

Seriake Dickson, senator representing Bayelsa West, has stated that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) possesses the capacity to electronically transmit election results across Nigeria, urging citizens to remain vigilant to ensure their votes count during elections.

In a statement released Tuesday, the former Bayelsa State governor — who also serves on the Senate electoral committee — said INEC had assured lawmakers of its readiness to upload and transmit polling unit results electronically nationwide. According to him, Nigerians should insist on transparent result transmission to strengthen democratic credibility.

Push for Transparent Elections

Dickson emphasised that electronic transmission of results is technically feasible anywhere telecommunications services exist. He noted that if citizens can make phone calls or conduct electronic financial transactions in a location, transmitting election results electronically should also be achievable there.

He clarified that while Nigeria does not currently practise full electronic voting, results announced at polling units can be uploaded immediately to the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal. This, he explained, helps limit manipulation that often occurs during the collation stage.

Electoral Act Amendment Seen as Progress

The senator described the recent amendment to the Electoral Act which supports electronic transmission of polling unit results  as an important democratic milestone. However, he acknowledged that the legislation provides flexibility where network connectivity challenges arise.

He added that INEC is expected to issue operational guidelines directing presiding officers to electronically transmit results after they are declared and signed at polling units, alongside making physical copies available.

According to Dickson, widespread adoption of electronic transmission would enhance real-time monitoring of election outcomes and reduce irregularities typically associated with ward and local government collation centres.

Beyond institutional reforms, Dickson urged Nigerians to actively protect democratic processes by participating in elections, sensitising others, and supporting credible candidates committed to safeguarding democratic rights.

He stressed that sustained civic vigilance remains essential to ensuring credible elections, noting that public engagement plays a key role in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic system.

His remarks come amid ongoing national discussions on electoral transparency following the National Assembly’s retention of provisions for electronic transmission of results, while stopping short of making real-time uploads mandatory due to concerns about internet access in some remote areas.

The issue continues to generate debate among policymakers, election observers, and civil society groups seeking improved electoral integrity in Nigeria.
