IGP Egbetokun Reportedly Furious Over ₦100m Security Vote Scandal Involving Son, Summons Police Management Team

Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has reportedly been thrown into deep anger and unease following media reports linking his son, Victor Adewale Egbetokun, to an alleged ₦100 million financial impropriety involving funds said to have originated from the Anambra State Government’s security vote account.

Multiple high-ranking police sources told News Reporter that the development triggered palpable tension at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, popularly referred to as the First Headquarters, where the IGP reportedly convened an emergency management meeting shortly after the investigative report was published.

According to sources privy to the meeting, Egbetokun openly confronted senior officers, accusing them of leaking sensitive financial documents to the media in what he allegedly described as a calculated attempt to embarrass him and undermine his authority.

The IGP was extremely angry, one source said. He told the management team that some of them were responsible for how documents got to SaharaReporters. He feels betrayed and believes this was deliberately done to destabilise him.

Another senior officer disclosed that the report has generated widespread anxiety within the police leadership, with the IGP reportedly summoning his son and issuing stern warnings in response to the unfolding controversy.

The allegations involving his son have caused serious problems at Force Headquarters, the source said.

The IGP reportedly cautioned Victor and instructed him to keep a low profile, including staying away from public display of luxury vehicles, to avoid drawing further attention.

Sources further revealed that the atmosphere within the police hierarchy has since become tense and hostile, as the IGP allegedly directed his frustration at members of the management team, whom he suspects of disloyalty.

The issue is extremely serious, another top police source said. The entire management team is under pressure. The IGP has become openly suspicious and hostile, accusing some senior officers of working against him.

Beyond internal accusations, multiple sources said the IGP has also turned his anger toward the Anambra State Government, which he allegedly accused of masterminding the scandal as part of a broader political plot to force him out of office.

According to one insider, Egbetokun believes the controversy surrounding his son is being weaponised to undermine his position as Inspector-General of Police.

He has accused the Anambra State Government of trying to unseat him, the source said. But he also said clearly that there is nothing they can do.

Another source quoted the IGP as boasting that his tenure is secure until 2027, regardless of the controversy or pressure from any quarter.

The source added that Egbetokun expressed bitterness over what he described as betrayal by Anambra State officials, particularly in light of the role he allegedly played during the state’s last governorship election.

He feels used,” the source said. According to him, after everything he did for them during the election, they are now trying to remove him.

Sources also disclosed that the IGP has grown increasingly suspicious of potential successors within the police hierarchy. One name repeatedly mentioned is Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Tunji Disu, currently serving at Force Headquarters.

The IGP is also angry at people he thinks could replace him, a source said. He suspects AIG Disu because he believes he has powerful and influential backers.

Another source alleged that powerful political interests, including a wealthy senator reportedly nursing a 2027 Ogun State governorship ambition, may be backing certain figures within the police hierarchy.

He believes some very powerful people with deep pockets are positioning others against him, the source said.

As a result, police leadership is said to be on edge, anticipating possible follow-up investigations that could further deepen the crisis.

They are on their toes, one source noted. Everyone is anticipating the next report. But the IGP remains very confident.

Despite the growing controversy and Nigeria’s worsening security situation, sources said the IGP is scheduled to travel to Lagos on Friday for the establishment of a new police band, a move some officers privately questioned.

This is happening at a time when the police are facing very serious allegations and insecurity is everywhere, a source queried. Does it make sense to be setting up a police band now?

Reports had earlier reported that Victor Adewale Egbetokun, son of the IGP, was accused of financial impropriety following allegations that he received a total of ₦100 million from the Anambra State Government’s Security Vote (VI) account in September 2025.

Multiple sources with direct knowledge of the transactions said the funds were allegedly transferred from the Anambra State Security Vote account domiciled at Sterling Bank into Victor Egbetokun’s Zenith Bank personal account, despite him holding no official position in the state government or any recognized security agency.

Documents obtained indicate that the ₦100 million was transferred in four tranches of ₦25 million each on September 12, 2025, with each transaction recorded as an In-Branch NIP payment.

Sources said the transactions raised concerns and were brought to the attention of the IGP, who allegedly objected and ordered the immediate return of the funds, reportedly referencing the 2005 Tafa Balogun corruption scandal as a cautionary example.

Records show that the ₦100 million was electronically reversed on September 29, 2025, in four tranches. However, sources allege that the funds were later withdrawn in cash and redeposited into Victor Egbetokun’s Zenith Bank account days afterward.

Police records allegedly show that on October 2, 2025, ₦100 million was deposited into the same account in four separate cash transactions of ₦25 million each.

When contacted, the Nigeria Police Force spokesperson, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, said he spoke with Victor Egbetokun, who confirmed that he noticed a suspicious inflow into his account at the time but could not recall the exact details.

According to Hundeyin, Victor said he immediately instructed his account officer to reverse the transaction and return the funds to the source, adding that he had issued a standing instruction to always be alerted of any inflow into his account.

He further stated that Victor denied any subsequent cash deposits after the reversal and challenged anyone with evidence to present it.
