Why I Dumped Islam for Christianity – Sola Allyson

Popular Nigerian singer, Sola Allyson, has opened up about her transition from Islam to Christianity, explaining how her childhood experiences and living arrangements shaped her spiritual journey.

Speaking in an interview on Oyinmomo TV, Allyson recounted growing up in two different homes following the separation of her parents. According to her, she spent her early years with her maternal grandmother in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, where she was raised in a Muslim household and strictly observed Islamic teachings and routines.

Her journey took a different turn when she later moved to Ikorodu, Lagos State, to live with her paternal grandparents. It was during this period that she reconnected with an old friend who regularly took her along to church. Allyson said the exposure introduced her to a new environment, fresh ideas, and a different style of worship that gradually influenced her faith.

Despite embracing Christianity, the singer spoke fondly of her Islamic roots, noting that she has never hidden her birth name, Rasheedat. She recalled looking up the meaning of the name as a child and appreciating its significance.

Allyson explained that her spiritual path was largely shaped by the people and environments she lived in at different stages of her life. While she practised Islam in Ijebu-Ode, her time in Ikorodu naturally drew her into Christian activities.

She added that over the years, she has explored various beliefs through personal experiences and reading, stressing that understanding God’s will matters more to her than rigid religious labels. According to Allyson, growing up in a mixed-faith environment has helped her relate freely with people of different religions.

The singer also revealed that her music career took a defining turn on January 17, 1997, after attending a music training session at a Celestial Church of Christ.
