Gov Diri Unveils Bayelsa’s First Commercial Aircraft in Historic Inaugural Flight

YENEGOA: Bayelsa State on Tuesday recorded a major milestone in its aviation journey as Governor Douye Diri led top dignitaries on the inaugural flight of the state’s first commercial aircraft, marking a new chapter in regional connectivity and economic development.

The ATR-72/600 aircraft — the first of two acquired by the state government — departed the domestic wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at 9:30 a.m. with about 50 passengers on board, including Governor Diri, former Deputy Governor Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John-Jonah (rtd.), members of the National Assembly Caucus from Bayelsa, and the Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri.

They touched down at the Bayelsa International Airport, Yenagoa, at 10:40 a.m. to loud celebrations from a large crowd. The aircraft received a traditional water-cannon salute from airport fire trucks, symbolizing its official entry into service.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Diri described the moment as historic, saying it underscores his administration’s commitment to building a future of air connectivity for Bayelsans.

Six years ago, we promised the people of Bayelsa a future of air connectivity and opportunity. Today, that promise takes wing. This is the beginning of a new era of regular and reliable air services that will fuel modern commerce, expand markets and empower our people, he said.

He added that the aircraft, currently registered under Pioneer Airline, will be renamed Air Bayelsa to reflect its ownership by the state.

Governor Diri also acknowledged the contributions of previous administrations to the state’s aviation journey, noting that late former Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha initiated the airport project while former Governor Seriake Dickson completed its construction.

The event drew several high-profile figures, including NDDC Managing Director Dr. Sam Ogbuku, Ijaw National Congress President Prof. Ben Okaba, and PANDEF National Chairman Dr. Boladei Igali.

Managing Director of Bayelsa Airport Limited, Air Vice-Marshal Nelson Calmday (rtd.), announced that the airline will operate daily flights to Lagos and Abuja, as well as routes within the Niger Delta.

Captain Henry Ungbuku, Managing Director of Pioneer Airlines, praised the state government for entrusting the airline with the operation of the aircraft and pledged to uphold the aspirations of the people.

Premium Trust Bank CEO Emmanuel Emefienim commended the initiative, describing it as a visionary and strategic partnership that will unlock economic opportunities.

Members of the Bayelsa National Assembly Caucus also pledged full support for the state’s developmental efforts, while Senator Lokpobiri urged government officials to patronize the airline to ensure sustainability.

NDDC’s Sam Ogbuku welcomed the development and promised the commission’s readiness to partner with the airline to strengthen regional transport and economic links.

The PANDEF president, Dr. Igali, lauded Governor Diri’s achievement, expressing pride on behalf of the region and pledging continuous support.

With the inauguration of the state’s first commercial aircraft and the imminent start of full operations, Bayelsa is positioning itself as a rising aviation hub in the Niger Delta, unlocking new possibilities for trade, travel and economic expansion.
