ASABA: Students of Unity Modern School in Asaba, Delta State, were reportedly forced to write one of their 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) papers late at night, using torchlights due to a prolonged delay and lack of electricity.
According to multiple reports and a viral video circulating on social media, the examination, originally scheduled for 2:00 p.m., did not begin until 6:00 p.m. due to a four-hour delay in the delivery of question papers.
The video footage shows students sitting in near-total darkness inside their classroom, struggling to complete the exam using torchlights. A man believed to be the exam supervisor is seen assisting by holding a torchlight for the students. The situation highlights the absence of electricity in the school at the time of the exam.
A female voice in the background of the video, believed to be a parent or school staff member, expressed frustration and disbelief over the situation. They are using torchlights to write WAEC. Even in the days of lanterns, we didn’t write exams like this,” she said.
She continued: This is happening in Asaba, the state capital, not a remote village. The paper scheduled for 2 p.m. was only delivered at 6 p.m., and now students are writing exams in the dark. This is not right. Afterwards, they will blame Tinubu. Did Tinubu delay WAEC?
The incident has sparked outrage online, with many criticizing the disorganized conduct of such an important examination and questioning the preparedness of WAEC and school authorities.
As of the time of reporting, neither WAEC officials nor the Delta State Ministry of Education had issued an official statement regarding the incident.
