Okpebholo And Idahosa Sworn In, Appoint Oshiomhole Son And Set Ambitious Plans in Motion

BENIN CITY: In a grand ceremony held on Tuesday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State’s newly elected Governor, Monday Okpebholo, was officially sworn into office, ushering in a new chapter for the state. Okpebholo, who emerged victorious in the September 2024 governorship election, succeeded former Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Amid cheers from supporters and heightened security, Okpebholo, joined by his two daughters, took the oath of office and allegiance at 1:00 pm, administered by the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa. Moments earlier, Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa was sworn in, with his wife by his side. Okpebholo later reviewed a guard of honor and participated in a police parade, further solidifying his leadership presence.

Five Point Agenda for Development
In his inaugural address, Governor Okpebholo laid out an ambitious five-point agenda aimed at transforming Edo State. The key pillars of his administration include improving security, enhancing infrastructure, boosting healthcare, ensuring food sufficiency, and expanding educational opportunities.

Our citizens are our top priority,  Okpebholo declared, vowing to tackle the state’s security challenges head on. He pledged to end the scourge of kidnapping and violent crimes, which have plagued the region in recent years, and to create a safer environment for residents and businesses alike.

On infrastructure, Okpebholo promised to address the deplorable state of roads, constructing new ones and improving existing routes to facilitate smoother transportation. He also emphasized the need for strategic partnerships with the Federal Government, the private sector, and international stakeholders to develop the state’s economy across multiple sectors.

The Governor also announced plans to support small businesses and market women with access to soft loans, and to improve education by recruiting more teachers and repairing dilapidated school buildings. He stressed the importance of providing opportunities for Edo’s youth, focusing on skills development and empowerment programs.

Strengthening Cultural Heritage and Democracy
In a nod to Edo’s rich cultural heritage, Okpebholo expressed his commitment to supporting the traditional institutions and promised to back the Federal Government’s decision to return looted Benin artefacts, honoring the Oba of Benin as the rightful custodian of these treasures.

Furthermore, the new administration intends to establish a panel to investigate the failure to inaugurate 14 members elect of the Edo State House of Assembly in 2019, underscoring a commitment to transparency and good governance.

President Tinubu Congratulates Okpebholo
President Bola Tinubu sent his congratulations to Governor Okpebholo, emphasizing the importance of upholding democracy and effective governance. In his message, delivered through Special Adviser Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President urged Okpebholo to work diligently to elevate the living standards of Edo residents and to strengthen the relationship between the state legislature and the executive. Tinubu also lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its successful management of the Edo governorship election.

Youth Parliament Calls for Inclusivity
In a show of support, the Edo State Youth Parliament called for greater youth representation in the new government. The Chairman, Fawaz Muhammad, congratulated Okpebholo and expressed confidence that his leadership would bring significant advancements in youth empowerment, education, and economic opportunities.

He urged the Governor to prioritize youth inclusion in his cabinet and policies, stressing that their energy and innovation could drive the state forward.

Obaseki Refutes Exit Rumors
Meanwhile, an aide to former Governor Godwin Obaseki has dismissed rumours suggesting that the former governor had fled the country. The aide clarified that Obaseki was in Lagos, where he had been hosted by friends and business associates. He also confirmed that Obaseki had addressed Edo residents in a broadcast, thanking them for their support during his tenure and reaffirming his continued commitment to the state.
