LAGOS: Nigerian actress Kate Henshaw has responded to a police report that links the growing phenomenon of hookup culture to ritual killings. The report, shared by Omolola Odutola, the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Police Command, highlighted alarming statistics regarding the increasing number of young women going missing, allegedly as a result of dangerous hookup arrangements with strangers.
Odutola stated that many of these cases were tied to ritualistic practices, with at least 10 young women vanishing daily, often after being lured to unknown locations by individuals they met through hookup platforms.

The report quickly gained attention, sparking a heated debate on social media. In a surprising turn, a social media user revisited a past statement made by Henshaw in which she was accused of promoting femicide. The user recalled Henshaw’s comments regarding Yahoo boys fraudsters who engage in ritual killings and how the actress had cautioned against dating such individuals, warning that women might be used for rituals.

The X user wrote, There was a time not too long ago @HenshawKate made a statement as regards this and some people came for her. Alas!!! She has been vindicated.
In a quick reply, Henshaw responded, Let the role model females who spouted I was promoting femicide show naa.. Alas, their mouths are shut!!
This comment harkened back to October 31, 2024, when the actress stirred controversy by commenting on a viral video of a young girl expressing her choice to date a Yahoo boy. At the time, Henshaw raised concerns about the dangers the girl might face, including the possibility of being used for ritual sacrifices. Henshaw wrote, “Na so dem go take pieces you for ritual… Yeye mindset.
Her comment was met with a barrage of criticism from social media users who accused her of being insensitive, while others wrongly interpreted her words as justifying femicide. One user even asked, This is so wrong to say. How is murder justifiable?

Henshaw fired back, saying, That’s the value she placed on herself with her words and actions. That’s how she reduced herself to be used by all and sundry. That’s the green light she has put on, but that’s OK with you.
In light of the recent police report, Henshaw’s earlier remarks seem to have gained a new layer of relevance, with some now acknowledging the validity of her warnings. Despite the backlash she faced at the time, the actress’ message about self-worth and caution in the context of dangerous relationships now resonates with a broader conversation about the dangers young women face in hookup culture.
