Gunmen Attack Police Checkpoint in Anambra, Two Injured

 

Gunmen have launched an attack on a police checkpoint in Ajali, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, leaving two security operatives injured. The Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday.

Ikenga, a Superintendent of Police, revealed that the attack resulted in a gunfight in which one police officer and one member of the Anambra State Vigilante Group (AVG) were injured by gunshots. The injured personnel are currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital.

The attackers set fire to several vehicles during the assault. A police Hilux and two operational vehicles belonging to the AVG were completely destroyed in the fire, along with a Sienna vehicle.

The gunmen, intercepted on Thursday on the Umuchu-Amesi-Uga Road, were found to be in possession of a stolen blue Hilux vehicle. During a search of the vehicle, coolers for food preservation were also discovered. The armed men were pursued after they attempted to attack the police checkpoint at Ajali.

Anambra, along with other South-Eastern states, has been facing increasing attacks by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and their armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Despite the presence of security forces, these groups have continued to launch attacks and enforce sit-at-home orders, costing the region billions of naira. It remains unclear whether the latest attack in Anambra was carried out by IPOB/ESN.
