ABUJA: The Federal Government on Thursday began the payment of New N70,000 minimum wage and its consequential adjustment to public servants across all levels of the federal civil service.
This is coming seven months after the organised labour, private sector and the representatives of both the federal and state government begins negotiation on the new minimum wage for every Nigerian worker
A warrant for this month’s salary signed by the Accountant-General of the Federation, Dr Oluwatoyin Madein, and addressed to the Budget Office of the Federation directed the commencement of the new payment. Over 1.2 million civil servants on the payroll of the Federal Government will be paid the newly approved minimum wage in September.
This was because the amount that government officials under the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure will receive each cadre was revealed in documents from the National Income, Salaries and Wages Commission. The sum was computed yearly.

- In a breakdown, level one officers will earn N930,000 yearly, while level two would make N934,160. Level three officers now receive a pay of N937,713, while grade level four officers are paid N950,243.
Officers at Grade Level Five will be paid N973,123 annually, at Grade Level Six N1,041,786 and at Grade Level Seven N1,277,667).
Likewise, grade level eight public employees will now receive N1, 479,276 annually; level nine officers will receive N1, 641,226; and level ten employees will receive N1, 806,041.
According to the paper, Grade level 12 officials at the senior level would now get N2,007,152 year when the consequential modifications are approved.
Level 13 officials earn N2,182,637 year, while level 15 officials receive N2,358,936, and level 16 public workers will receive N3,611,689 annually.
Officers at Grade Level 17, the highest rank in the civil service and a post designated for permanent secretaries, would henceforth be paid N6,918,560.
A noteworthy observation made by one of our correspondents was that public servants were assigned a pay under each level, which was subject to alter annually before to their next promotion to the next level.
