ABUJA: In response to claims that convicted cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, who was given a six-month prison sentence, was given an apartment outside the correctional institution, Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has vowed to ensure that effective sanctions are meted out to any official found wanting.
The minister stated that the suspension of top officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service, or NCoS, was necessary to provide an unhindered probe into the circumstances, during a media encounter on Friday in Abuja.
He said: “We will not spare anybody no matter how highly placed. Let’s be patient. Investigation is on. But let’s be assured that nobody will be shielded and nobody will be protected.
Tunji-Ojo expressed confidence in the ability of the investigative panel headed by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani, to discharge its mandate creditably.
According to him, members of the committee were carefully selected, with two of them from the civil society community.
Regarding vandalism in different parts of the nation, the minister stated that throughout the course of the previous year, 2, 254 vandals and oil bunkerers were captured by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Of these, 550 currently face charges, and 122 convictions have already been secured.
In addition, by destroying 64 illicit oil dumps and 150 illegal refineries, the NSCDC disrupted networks of organized crime.Transforming the private security industry has also produced remarkable outcomes.
We now have 115 licensed businesses functioning legally, and we are in the process of granting licenses to another 178 businesses. Furthermore, 3,394 private security guards have completed extensive training, and the industry brought in a remarkable ₦861,620,500 in income. We have also prioritized the National Plan on Safe School initiative, providing a secure environment for our children to learn without fear”, he stated
