Ekpeye Advocacy Group Rejects Governor Fubara’s Claim on Monarchs’ Arrests

PORT HARCOURT: The Ekpeye Advocacy Group has refuted recent comments made by Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, regarding the arrest and detention of two monarchs, suggesting that the actions were politically motivated.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by its convener, Olimini Chinuzoke, and Director of Publicity, Nnamdi Ezebalike, the group clarified that the monarchs were arrested in connection with an alleged murder.

Governor Fubara had claimed during the inauguration of the remodeled Government Girls’ Secondary School in Ahoada Town that the arrests of His Imperial Majesty Eze Kelvin Anugwo (Eze Ekpeye Logbo) and Eze Cassidy Ikegbidi were as a result of their political allegiance to him. He further stated that the Chief of Staff to the Government House, Dr. Edison Ehie, was facing fabricated charges from the police due to similar reasons.

However, the Ekpeye Advocacy Group rejected the governor’s assertion, emphasizing that the monarchs’ arrests were linked to the murder of the Divisional Police Officer of Ahoada, Bako Amgbashim.

The governor’s claim that the Ekpeye kings were targeted because of their support for him is unfounded and misleading. Their arrest was directly related to the brutal killing of SP Bako, which occurred on September 9, 2023, well before any political tensions involving the governor arose, the group stated.

The group further pointed out that DPO Bako was killed on September 9, 2023, and the Ekpeye monarchs were arrested just two days later, on September 11, 2023. In contrast, the political controversy surrounding the governor did not surface until October 30, 2023. Therefore, the group argued, the two events are unrelated, and the governor’s attempt to link them is without basis
