Nigeria’s AI conversation has largely focused on innovation, jobs, investment, startups and the fear that automation could displace workers. While these issues remain important, another question is equally fundamental: Can artificial intelligence truly transform Nigeria if millions of Nigerians cannot interact with it in languages they understand best?
For a country with hundreds of indigenous languages and dialects, the answer should be clear. Nigeria’s digital future must be inclusive, and that means ensuring that technology can communicate with citizens beyond English.
Nigeria has taken steps to strengthen its artificial intelligence talent pipeline through initiatives involving the Federal Government, technology companies, developers and innovation organisations.
One of the notable developments is the AI Academy Nigeria, a capacity-building initiative involving Meta, the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria.
The initiative is integrated into the broader 3 Million Technical Talent programme, with training designed to equip developers, entrepreneurs and early-career professionals with practical AI skills.
Its curriculum includes developer bootcamps and an AI Startup Pitchathon, with activities linked to major technology events.
The programme represents an important step in developing the human capital required for Nigeria to compete in the global AI economy.
But talent development alone is not enough.
Nigeria must also determine what kind of AI ecosystem it wants to build and, more importantly, who should benefit from it.
Nigeria’s linguistic diversity presents both a challenge and an enormous opportunity for technology developers.
While English remains the dominant language of government, education, commerce and digital platforms, many Nigerians communicate primarily in indigenous languages.
This creates a potential barrier to accessing AI-powered services.
An AI system that works exceptionally well in English but poorly in Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Kanuri, Fulfulde and other Nigerian languages risks reproducing existing inequalities in the digital economy.
The next generation of AI should therefore not simply be capable of understanding Nigeria’s people. It should be capable of understanding Nigerians in their own languages.
Imagine a farmer in a rural community being able to ask an AI assistant about crop diseases in Hausa or another local language and receive an understandable response.
Imagine a healthcare information platform providing basic health education in Yoruba, Igbo or Kanuri.
Imagine students interacting with educational AI tools in their mother tongue rather than being forced to translate their questions into English before accessing useful information.
These are not merely technological conveniences. They could become powerful tools for digital inclusion.
Agriculture is one area where indigenous-language AI could have a particularly significant impact.
Millions of Nigerian farmers operate outside major urban centres and may have limited access to agricultural extension officers or specialised information.
AI-powered platforms capable of communicating in local languages could provide information about weather patterns, crop management, pest control, soil conditions and market opportunities.
Such systems would not replace agricultural experts. Instead, they could extend the reach of existing expertise to communities that are often underserved.
The same principle could apply to livestock management and other rural economic activities.
Language barriers can be particularly serious when people are seeking information about healthcare.
AI-powered systems could potentially provide basic health information, explain medical terminology and direct people towards appropriate healthcare services in languages they understand.
Such tools would need strong safeguards and should not replace qualified medical professionals, particularly for diagnosis and treatment.
However, accessible AI could help improve health communication and awareness, especially in communities where language remains a significant barrier to accessing information.
Nigeria’s education sector is another area where local-language technology could make a difference.
AI tutors could explain difficult concepts in indigenous languages, translate educational materials and support students who struggle with English-language instruction.
For younger learners in particular, being able to understand a concept in a familiar language can improve comprehension and engagement.
The goal should not be to eliminate English from education or technology.
Rather, Nigeria should develop a multilingual digital environment in which English exists alongside the country’s indigenous languages.
Building effective AI models for Nigerian languages will not happen automatically.
Artificial intelligence systems require large amounts of high-quality data to learn how languages are spoken, written and understood.
Many African languages remain significantly underrepresented in existing datasets used to develop AI systems.
This means Nigeria needs deliberate investment in local-language datasets, natural language processing research, speech recognition and translation technologies.
Universities, technology companies, government agencies, researchers and communities can play important roles in collecting and preserving linguistic data.
Open-source initiatives could also help researchers and startups develop language technologies without each organisation having to begin from scratch.
The development of local-language AI should therefore be considered alongside investments in computing infrastructure, talent development, startups and research.
Nigeria has an opportunity to build AI systems that reflect its own cultural and linguistic realities rather than simply importing technologies developed primarily for other markets.
This is particularly important as the country seeks to establish itself as one of Africa’s leading digital economies.
A successful Nigerian AI ecosystem should not be measured solely by the number of startups created, engineers trained or investments attracted.
It should also be measured by how many ordinary Nigerians can actually use the technology.
If AI remains concentrated among English-speaking professionals in major cities, its transformative potential will be limited.
But if it can reach farmers, students, traders, artisans, teachers, healthcare workers and communities in their own languages, its social impact could be considerably greater.
Nigeria’s emerging AI initiatives provide an opportunity to broaden the country’s technology ambitions.
The AI Academy and similar programmes can help produce the developers and entrepreneurs needed to build the next generation of Nigerian technology companies.
The next step should be encouraging those innovators to solve distinctly Nigerian problems.
That includes developing AI that can listen, speak, translate, teach and provide useful information in indigenous languages.
Government policy should encourage investment in local-language datasets and research. Universities should expand linguistic and computational research. Technology companies should develop products designed for multilingual African markets. Communities should also be involved in preserving and digitising their languages.
Nigeria should not have to choose between participating in the global AI economy and preserving its linguistic identity.
It can do both.
The real opportunity is to build an AI ecosystem that is globally competitive while remaining deeply rooted in Nigerian realities.
Artificial intelligence should not become another technology that excludes people because of language. It should become a bridge that brings more Nigerians into the digital economy.
For Nigeria, indigenous languages are not simply part of its cultural heritage. They could become a critical component of its digital future.
