Agbakoba Blasts Politicians, Says Democracy in Nigeria Is Broken, Needs a Rejig

LAGOS: Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, has called for a fundamental overhaul of Nigeria’s democratic system, criticizing the current political landscape as ineffective and unproductive.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Agbakoba expressed disappointment with the nation’s democratic progress, stating that Nigeria’s political structure is not working.

He also condemned opposition parties for collapsing their structures into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), suggesting a lack of genuine political commitment.

I thought things would be much better by now, he said. Looking at our history from independence in 1960, through several military coups, to over 25 years of democracysomething is clearly wrong. The process is not delivering.

Agbakoba further argued that Nigeria needs to move away from Western democratic models imposed by Europe and America, which he believes are incompatible with the country’s unique context.

In my reflections, I’ve concluded it’s time to shed this ‘Oyibo’ model. It’s simply not working for us, he added.
