Wike Announces N500m Support Fund for Family of Late Senator Mpigi

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has unveiled a ₦500 million support fund for the family of the late Rivers State lawmaker, Barinada Mpigi.

Wike made the announcement on Thursday during a night of tribute held in Port Harcourt, emphasising that political allies must go beyond ceremonial gestures and provide tangible support to the families of fallen colleagues.

According to him, setting up burial committees alone is insufficient, stressing the need for meaningful assistance that reflects loyalty and solidarity.

Forming committees for burial is not enough. We must show clearly that we will not abandon the family he left behind, Wike stated.

The minister explained that the ₦500 million fund, raised under the Rivers State Rainbow Coalition, is intended to provide long-term support for the late senator’s family. He added that the initiative would also help sustain Mpigi’s legacy through the establishment of a foundation.

Wike described the late lawmaker as a steadfast ally who stood by him during challenging political periods, recalling moments of unwavering loyalty and personal support.

When we had political challenges, Barry was always coming to my house to show solidarity and commitment,he said. He once told me, ‘No matter the situation, I will never leave you.

He further praised Mpigi’s contributions to the Ogoni people, noting his role in advancing developmental projects, including efforts linked to the establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology in Ogoni.

Barinada Mpigi, widely regarded as a grassroots mobiliser and dedicated public servant, passed away on February 19, 2026.

Wike reaffirmed that the support fund would ensure the senator’s family is not left behind while also preserving the values and impact of his public service.
