UMUAHIA: A viral video circulating on social media has captured the moment a member of the House of Representatives, Amobi Ogah, allegedly had his mobile phone stolen while attending a burial ceremony in Abia State.
The incident occurred on Thursday, March 26, during the funeral of renowned clergyman Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia.
According to the video, which has been widely shared across social media platforms, the lawmaker was seen moving through the crowd at the funeral while being surrounded by sympathizers and other attendees.
In the footage, a man believed to be the suspect was seen gradually making his way closer to the lawmaker amid the large gathering. Moments later, he allegedly picked the phone from Ogah without drawing immediate attention from those around him.
The video later showed the moment the lawmaker appeared to notice that his phone was missing. However, he seemed unsure about who exactly had taken the device.
The burial ceremony reportedly attracted many dignitaries, religious leaders, community members and sympathisers who gathered to pay their last respects to the late cleric.
Like many major burial ceremonies in southeastern Nigeria, the event drew a large crowd, creating a busy environment around the venue.
Crowded gatherings often make it easier for pickpockets to operate unnoticed, especially when people are focused on social interactions, condolence visits or ceremonial activities.
Security experts say such situations provide opportunities for thieves to take advantage of momentary distractions.
Following the circulation of the video, many social media users reacted with surprise and concern over the incident.
Some commenters claimed that the suspected thief could be identified from the footage, pointing to a man wearing green clothing who appeared close to the lawmaker shortly before the phone went missing.
Others called for security agencies to review the video in order to identify and apprehend the suspect.
A number of users also advised people attending crowded public events to remain vigilant and hold tightly to their personal belongings.
Incidents of pickpocketing at crowded gatherings such as funerals, concerts, markets and political rallies are not uncommon in Nigeria.
Security analysts say criminals often blend into crowds and use distractions to steal phones, wallets and other valuables.
They recommend that individuals attending large public events avoid displaying expensive items and keep phones or wallets in secure pockets or bags.
Public figures, in particular, are often surrounded by supporters and well-wishers at events, which can sometimes create an opportunity for opportunistic theft.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official confirmation from law enforcement authorities regarding whether the suspect seen in the video has been identified or arrested.
It also remains unclear whether the stolen phone has been recovered.
The video, however, continues to trend online, with many Nigerians expressing concern about the ease with which the theft occurred despite the presence of many people around the lawmaker.
Observers say the incident serves as a reminder of the need for greater vigilance and improved security measures at large public gatherings.
