UNIBEN Bans Sign-Out Celebrations, Warns of Expulsion and Certificate Withdrawal

BEENIN-CITY: The management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has banned all forms of sign-out celebrations by graduating students, warning that violators risk severe disciplinary actions, including rustication, expulsion, or withdrawal of certificates.

This was contained in a circular issued on Tuesday, October 7, by the university’s Registrar, Mr. Ademola Bobola, and addressed to members of the university community.

According to the circular, the decision followed a management meeting held on Monday, October 6, during which the institution reaffirmed an earlier Senate resolution prohibiting sign-out activities on campus.

No sign-out celebration of any kind, including signing on T-shirts and playing of music, will be tolerated, Bobola stated.

He explained that the ban aims to maintain order, discipline, and academic decorum within the university environment, especially during and after examinations.

The circular further warned that the university would not condone any form of disorderly conduct, unauthorised gatherings, or parading around campus in branded vehicles.

Indiscriminate parading around the campuses in any brand of vehicle will not be permitted, it read, adding that unauthorized vehicles would not be allowed into the campus throughout the last week of the second-semester examination.

The management also prohibited large gatherings around faculties, schools, or institutes after examinations and directed that photographers should not mount photo stands or galleries for such celebrations.

Additionally, the university cautioned parents and guardians of final-year students against visiting the campus during the concluding days of examinations.

Parents and guardians of final-year students are advised to stay away from the Faculty, School, or Institute premises, especially on the last day of examination,” the Registrar added.

Bobola emphasized that the institution’s decision was taken to safeguard the university’s core values of discipline and respect for academic order.

Members of the university community are invited to kindly note the above position for strict compliance.

Any violation will attract severe disciplinary sanctions, including withdrawal of certificate, rustication, and expulsion,” he warned.
