ABUJA: Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has announced plans to lead a mass protest on October 20, 2025, to demand the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Sowore made the announcement on Thursday via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, describing the planned demonstration as a historic #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest march scheduled to take place at Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, beginning at 7 a.m.
The activist also revealed that he had reached out to several political and regional leaders to join the movement, including Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo; Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti; Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi; and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
I personally contacted Dr. Alex Otti, Prof. Charles Soludo, and Mr. Peter Obi through his team.
While Otti and Soludo didn’t respond to my calls or messages, Obi’s team acknowledged that he is currently travelling.
I also reached out to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s aides, while Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe promised to return my call, Sowore stated.
He added that members of the Abia State House of Assembly informed him of their plans to travel to London next week before heading to Abuja for further engagement.
They reportedly intend to meet with the Attorney General of the Federation before joining any protest action.
Emphasizing the urgency of the campaign, Sowore declared: This is not the time for hesitation.
If we truly believe that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu deserves freedom, then every leader of conscience must act now, not later.
The upcoming protest aims to intensify public pressure on the Federal Government for Kanu’s release after several court orders granting him bail have yet to be implemented.
