NUJ, DBS Asaba Mourn Broadcaster Vivian Nkechika After Fatal Gas Explosion

ASABA: The Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS), Asaba, and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Delta State have expressed deep sorrow over the death of broadcaster Comrade Vivian Nkechika, who died following injuries sustained in a gas explosion.

In a statement issued on behalf of the journalism community, Delta State NUJ Chairman, Mr Churchill Oyowe, described her passing as shocking and profoundly painful, noting that colleagues remain heartbroken by the sudden loss.

It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the sudden passing of our colleague in the broadcast family of DBS Asaba, Vivian Nkechika, Oyowe said, adding that her death has left members of the media community deeply bereaved.

As part of efforts to honour her memory, the NUJ announced the temporary suspension of activities across its platforms for at least 12 hours.

During this period, no stories were to be published, while partner organisations were formally notified of the mourning gesture.

Life, indeed, should not go on as though nothing has happened, Oyowe added.

The NUJ chairman noted that the loss was particularly distressing as it occurred barely a month after the death of another colleague, Matthew Ochei, earlier in January.

Providing further details, Chairman of the NUJ DBS Asaba Chapel, Comrade Pere Botu, confirmed that Nkechika died on Tuesday afternoon at the Asaba Specialist Hospital after suffering severe burns from a gas explosion at her residence about a week earlier.

Botu described her as a vibrant professional who made meaningful contributions to both the broadcasting station and the journalism union, adding that the newsroom remains in mourning.

Colleagues and media practitioners across Delta State have continued to pay tribute to the late broadcaster, remembering her not only as a professional associate but also as a friend whose absence will be deeply felt.

Media organisations have called for reflection, solidarity, and support for her family during this difficult period while praying for the repose of her soul.
