UYO: Tragedy struck at Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, as a Nigerian Army officer, Lieutenant Samson Haruna, reportedly died after sustaining severe burns when his wife allegedly set him ablaze during a domestic altercation.
The late officer, who was also a medical doctor serving as the Regimental Medical Officer (RMO) with the 6 Battalion, got married to his wife, Retyit Obadiah Dalong, on April 21, 2025, in Jos, Plateau State.
According to reports, the unfortunate incident occurred on September 22, 2025, following a heated argument between the couple at their residence within the barracks.

During the quarrel, Mrs. Haruna allegedly poured petrol (PMS) on her husband and set him on fire.
Lieutenant Haruna sustained critical burns and was initially treated at the Military Reference Section (MRS) within the barracks before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) for advanced medical care.
Despite sustained efforts by medical personnel to save his life, the officer succumbed to his injuries.
Security sources confirmed that the suspect has since been arrested and is currently in police custody, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident are ongoing.
The death of the young officer has sparked widespread shock and sorrow among colleagues and residents of the barracks community.
