AMSTERDAM: The Kingdom of the Netherlands has entered a historic political era following the swearing-in of 38-year-old centrist politician, Rob Jetten, as the country’s youngest-ever prime minister and the first openly gay leader in its history.
Jetten officially assumed office after leading his party to a dramatic electoral victory in the October general elections, defeating the far-right Party for Freedom (PVV) headed by controversial politician Geert Wilders in a tightly contested race.
The new prime minister takes over leadership from Dick Schoof, whose administration collapsed during the summer of 2025, forcing snap elections and plunging the country into months of political negotiations.
Jetten’s inauguration comes 117 days after the national polls, marking the end of prolonged coalition talks required to form a workable government within the Dutch parliamentary system.

His government intends to push ahead with controversial plans to drastically reduce emissions linked to the Netherlands’ large livestock industry a sector long criticized for its environmental impact but economically vital to Dutch agriculture.
