Netherlands Swears in Youngest, First Openly Gay Prime Minister

AMSTERDAM: The Kingdom of the Netherlands has entered a historic political era following the swearing-in of 38-year-old centrist politician, Rob Jetten, as the country’s youngest-ever prime minister and the first openly gay leader in its history.

Jetten officially assumed office after leading his party to a dramatic electoral victory in the October general elections, defeating the far-right Party for Freedom (PVV) headed by controversial politician Geert Wilders in a tightly contested race.

The new prime minister takes over leadership from Dick Schoof, whose administration collapsed during the summer of 2025, forcing snap elections and plunging the country into months of political negotiations.

Jetten’s inauguration comes 117 days after the national polls, marking the end of prolonged coalition talks required to form a workable government within the Dutch parliamentary system.

His emergence is widely viewed as both a generational and social milestone for the European nation, reflecting shifting political attitudes and growing acceptance of diversity in leadership across Europe.

Jetten will head a fragile coalition government comprising his own party, Democrats 66 (D66), alongside the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) and the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD).

Despite forming government, the coalition controls only 66 out of the 150 seats in parliament, meaning the administration must rely heavily on opposition cooperation to pass legislation a situation analysts say could test Jetten’s consensus-building skills from the outset.

Among the new government’s top priorities is a significant increase in defence expenditure. The administration plans to invest billions of euros into strengthening the military in line with NATO’s proposed defence spending benchmark of five percent of gross domestic product.

Equally prominent on Jetten’s agenda are ambitious environmental reforms. His government intends to push ahead with controversial plans to drastically reduce emissions linked to the Netherlands’ large livestock industry a sector long criticized for its environmental impact but economically vital to Dutch agriculture.

Jetten’s rise to power represents a landmark moment not only politically but socially, positioning the Netherlands among countries embracing inclusive leadership at the highest level of government.

Political observers note that his leadership signals a generational shift in European governance, combining liberal social values with centrist economic and security policies at a time of rising political polarization across the continent.

As his administration begins work, attention will focus on how effectively the young prime minister manages coalition pressures, economic demands, climate commitments, and growing geopolitical challenges facing Europe.
