LAGOS: Two years after the death of rising star Mohbad and the storm of accusations that followed, Nigerian singer Naira Marley has spoken out in a tell-all video, insisting he had no involvement in the tragedy.
Recounting the events of September 12, 2023, Marley said he was shocked when he first heard about Mohbad’s passing. Someone among us said Mohbad is dead, and I thought it was a lie.
I believed it was just a stunt to promote him. Later, I saw reports that he died of an ear infection, and I immediately felt something was off, he explained.

The singer stressed that he was not even in Nigeria at the time of Mohbad’s death, yet he was swiftly blamed by the public. Next thing I knew, I was trending online.
People started digging up old NDLEA videos and clips of Mohbad’s 2022 fight with his manager. How could I be involved when I wasn’t even in the country? I can show my passport stamps. I didn’t even get the chance to mourn him properly, Marley lamented.
He further criticized the Nigerian police for detaining him during investigations. In a sane country, the police would have arrested everyone who was with him 24 to 48 hours before his death. Instead, they picked me up.
When I returned to Nigeria to clear my name, I was locked up in Panti for two months, and they seized my passport. There was no reason for that, he said.
