Mugabe’s Son Arrested in Zimbabwe Over Cannabis Possession

HARARE: Robert Mugabe Jr., son of the late former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, has been arrested in Harare on charges of drug possession after police allegedly found cannabis in his bag during a traffic stop.

The 33-year-old was intercepted on Wednesday for allegedly driving the wrong way on a one-way street. According to police, two sachets of cannabis were recovered from his belongings. Five other suspects believed to be part of a drug syndicate connected to him were also taken into custody with marijuana and ecstasy.

Mugabe Jr.’s lawyer has rejected the allegations, claiming the substances belonged to other passengers in a separate vehicle. He also accused the authorities of exaggerating the quantity of drugs seized.

The case has sparked public attention, partly due to Mugabe Jr.’s past run-ins with the law. In 2023, he was arrested for allegedly damaging property and assaulting a police officer, but the matter was later resolved through an out-of-court settlement.

His late father, Robert Mugabe, ruled Zimbabwe for nearly four decades before being ousted from power in 2017. While the family initially had strained ties with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration, Mugabe Jr. reconciled with the ruling Zanu-PF party in 2022 after making a high-profile appearance at a party rally.

Mugabe Jr. remains in custody as the court deliberates on his bail application.
