DAURA: Yusuf Buhari, the only son of Nigeria’s late former president Muhammadu Buhari, has formally declared his intention to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives of Nigeria in the 2027 general elections.
The young politician, who holds the traditional title Talban Daura, disclosed his ambition in a personally signed letter dated April 3, 2026, in which he informed party stakeholders of his plan to run for the Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua Federal Constituency seat.
In the letter addressed to political leaders and stakeholders within the constituency, Yusuf Buhari said his decision followed extensive consultations and a desire to contribute to quality leadership and development in the area.
“With all respect, I am extremely delighted to write and inform you of my intention to contest for the seat of House of Representatives at the Sandamu/Daura/Mai’adua Federal Constituency under the platform of the All-Progressives Congress, he wrote.
According to him, his ambition is driven by a commitment to promote infrastructural growth and improve the welfare of residents within the constituency.
After wide consultations, I wish to contest for the seat of the House of Representatives as my contribution to ensure good and qualitative leadership,” the letter read.
He also appealed to political leaders, party members and residents of the constituency to support his candidacy, expressing optimism that their backing would help him deliver meaningful development to the area.
Your support will help my ambition succeed in bringing infrastructural development as well as human support and development to the people of this constituency,” he added.
Yusuf Buhari’s declaration comes shortly after leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Sandamu Local Government Area publicly endorsed him as their preferred candidate for the federal constituency seat.
The endorsement reportedly emerged during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held at the Sandamu Local Government Secretariat in Katsina State.
The gathering brought together political office holders, party executives and other influential figures from across the Daura/Sandamu/Mai’Adua Federal Constituency.
During the meeting, the Sandamu council chairman, Usman Na-Lado, explained that the endorsement reflected a collective decision reached by party leaders after consultations.
According to him, Yusuf Buhari’s candidacy was widely accepted by stakeholders due to what they described as his leadership potential and political acceptability within the constituency.
Beyond endorsing Buhari’s son for the House of Representatives seat, the stakeholders also used the meeting to reaffirm their support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2027 elections.
They equally declared their backing for Dikko Umaru Radda, the governor of Katsina State, as the party’s preferred candidate for the governorship race.
Political observers say the endorsements highlight early political alignments within the ruling party as preparations gradually begin for the next general elections.
Meanwhile, sources within the party have suggested that Yusuf Buhari’s endorsement by stakeholders may have been influenced by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda.
A party insider reportedly claimed that the governor played a key role in backing the former president’s son as the preferred candidate for the constituency.
Yusuf Buhari is the state governor’s anointed candidate,” the source said, suggesting that the move reflects the governor’s political strategy for the constituency ahead of the 2027 elections.
Yusuf Buhari has largely maintained a low political profile despite his father’s prominence in Nigerian politics.
His decision to contest for a legislative seat mark what many observers consider his first major step into active political participation.
Political analysts believe his family name and strong connections within the ruling party could significantly shape the political dynamics in the Daura/Sandamu/Mai’Adua Federal Constituency.
However, analysts also note that the race could still attract other contenders within the All-Progressives Congress, as well as candidates from opposition parties.
Although the 2027 general elections are still more than a year away, Yusuf Buhari’s declaration is already drawing attention to the evolving political landscape in northern Nigeria.
The move also reflects growing preparations among political actors as parties begin positioning potential candidates and consolidating support bases ahead of the next electoral cycle.
If successful in securing the party’s ticket and winning the election, Yusuf Buhari would become one of the youngest political figures from the Buhari political dynasty to hold a national legislative office.
For now, however, his focus remains on building support within his constituency and securing the backing of party stakeholders as the race toward 2027 gradually gains momentum.
