Kwara 2027: Renowned Neurosurgeon Prof. Wale Sulaiman Enters Governorship Race, Raising Political Stakes

The political atmosphere in Kwara State is beginning to heat up ahead of the 2027 Kwara State governorship election following indications that renowned neurosurgeon and public health advocate Wale Sulaiman is preparing to join the race for the state’s top office.

Sulaiman, a respected medical professional and former Special Adviser on Health Matters to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, is widely regarded as one of the emerging political figures to watch in the coming election cycle. His possible entry into the contest is already generating discussions within political circles, with analysts suggesting that it could reshape the dynamics of the governorship race.

During his tenure in the current administration, Sulaiman played a visible role in strengthening the state’s healthcare response, particularly during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Working alongside the government and other stakeholders, he contributed to the development of strategies that helped the state manage the public health crisis and mitigate its impact on residents.

One of the most notable achievements linked to his tenure was the rehabilitation of the oxygen plant at Sobi Specialist Hospital, a critical medical facility in Ilorin.

The oxygen plant had reportedly remained inactive for nearly a decade before it was restored, significantly improving the hospital’s ability to provide lifesaving medical services.

Beyond emergency interventions during the pandemic, Sulaiman also pushed for a long-term healthcare transformation agenda for the state. Among his proposals was a comprehensive healthcare master plan designed to expand access to quality and affordable medical services across urban and rural communities in Kwara.

Part of that vision included strengthening the Harmony Advanced Diagnostic Centre, with plans to transform it into a modern medical hub capable of attracting patients from across Nigeria and beyond. The proposal aimed to position the centre as a potential medical tourism destination, reducing the need for residents to seek advanced healthcare abroad.

Before returning to Nigeria to participate in public service, Sulaiman built an impressive international medical career. He served as a Professor of Neurosurgery at Tulane University in the United States and held senior leadership roles within the Ochsner Health System in New Orleans.

In those roles, he functioned as System Chairman of Neurosurgery and Co-Medical Director of a Neuroscience Institute, gaining recognition within the global medical community.

His supporters argue that this blend of international professional experience and local public service gives him a unique perspective on governance and development.

Political observers also point to Sulaiman’s efforts to connect the state government with Kwarans living abroad. During his time in office, diaspora groups were brought together under a unified umbrella known as Kwarans in Diaspora, which helped coordinate support and development initiatives for the state.

Through this collaboration, members of the diaspora contributed equipment and resources to support the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including the donation of hand-sanitising machines and other health supplies.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq had previously acknowledged Sulaiman’s contributions to the administration, praising his expertise and the strategic ideas he brought to the state’s healthcare policies and interventions.

Beyond governance, Sulaiman has gradually built a presence within the political structure of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State. Party members and political stakeholders often describe him as a consensus-builder capable of fostering unity across different factions of the party.

His political visibility increased significantly during the 2023 Kwara South senatorial election, where he attracted more than 27,000 votes despite the competitive nature of the race.

Political analysts described the outcome as a notable showing that highlighted his growing grassroots support and the level of acceptance he enjoys among voters in the district.

As preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gather momentum, many observers believe Sulaiman’s possible entry into the governorship race could intensify political calculations among aspirants within the ruling party and the opposition.

With a career that combines professional excellence, policy experience, and political engagement, the neurosurgeon-turned-politician is increasingly being viewed as one of the influential figures who could shape the future political direction of Kwara State.

For now, however, the build-up to the 2027 Kwara State governorship election is still in its early stages.

Yet the growing interest surrounding Wale Sulaiman suggests that the coming political season in Kwara may be one of the most closely watched contests in the state’s recent history.
