Kano Man Seeks Police Guidance After Wife Rejects His Plan to Marry Second Wife

KANO: A man in Kano State has approached the police to seek clarification on whether it is lawful to offer his wife ₦2 million in exchange for her consent to his plan to marry a second wife.

According to the spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the man walked into the Bompai Police Headquarters on Saturday, October 18, to ask if his proposal violated any law.

A man has come to Bompai saying his wife refused to allow him to marry a second wife. He is inquiring whether it is legal to offer her ₦2 million to consent to the marriage,” Kiyawa wrote in a Facebook post.

The police spokesperson did not disclose the identity of the man or his wife but confirmed that the inquiry was purely advisory and not a criminal complaint.

Polygamy is permitted under Islamic law, which many Kano residents practice, but such arrangements often depend on mutual understanding and financial capacity. The unusual case has sparked online debate over marital consent, rights, and gender relations in northern Nigeria.
