ONITSHA: The political history of Anambra State was rewritten as Justina Azuka emerged victorious in the bye-election for the Anambra State House of Assembly, representing Onitsha North 1 Constituency. Her win marks the first time a candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has secured an elective position in the state.
Azuka’s victory carries profound personal and political significance. Her late husband, who previously represented Onitsha North 1 in the State Assembly, was kidnapped and murdered in Anambra, a tragic event that left the constituency in mourning and the seat vacant.
Rising from this painful loss, Azuka stepped forward to continue his legacy, gaining the trust and overwhelming support of her constituents.
In a statement after the polls, the Justina Azuka Campaign Organization expressed deep gratitude to the people of Onitsha North 1 for their remarkable turnout, patience, and peaceful conduct during the election.
“Your commitment to democracy reflects the resilient spirit of our people, the campaign stated, while also extending special appreciation to Mr. Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, whose encouragement and support were described as instrumental to the victory.
Her election is being hailed as not only a breakthrough for the ADC but also a testament to courage, resilience, and the vibrancy of democracy in Anambra.
For many, Justina Azuka has become a symbol of hope and determination, proving that tragedy can give birth to transformative leadership.
