MINNA: Former President Goodluck Jonathan has described the Minna residence of former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), as a Mecca of sorts for Nigerians, attributing it to his leadership qualities and contributions to national unity.
Jonathan made the remark on Sunday when he led other well-wishers to visit the former leader in Minna as part of activities marking Babangida’s 84th birthday.
He praised IBB as a statesman who has consistently demonstrated commitment to the peace and unity of Nigeria. Since independence, Nigeria has produced many leaders, but Gen. Babangida stands out clearly as one of those who genuinely want the best for the country.
That is why today, his house is like a Mecca of sorts. People come to him regularly, and that says a lot about his character, Jonathan said.
According to him, Babangida never presented himself as a sectional leader but as one who believed strongly in a united Nigeria.
He added that the former military president will continue to be celebrated for his enduring role in promoting national cohesion and mentoring younger generations.
“Our prayer for him is long life and strength, so that he can continue to guide the younger ones and inspire them with his exemplary footsteps, Jonathan stated.
The low-key birthday celebration featured prayers and symbolic gifts presented by family members, friends, and political associates.
