FEC Proposes Presidential Task Force on ‘Detty December’

ABUJA: The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has proposed the establishment of a Presidential Task Force on ‘Detty December’ to coordinate Nigeria’s booming end-of-year tourism and creative economy.

Minister of Art, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents after Thursday’s FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Musawa explained that the proposed inter-agency body will harmonize federal and state efforts to position Nigeria especially Lagos as a major global destination for December festivities.

We know Detty December is just around the corner. It started in Lagos and has spread across the country with homecoming events, East capital vibes, and the ‘Naija Season, she said.

These brands have now been adopted as national catalysts for tourism and the creative industry. The President has been asked to establish a Presidential Task Force on Detty December to drive coordination across agencies.

According to the minister, the initiative will also provide institutional support to Lagos State, which hosts the largest concentration of concerts, festivals, and inbound diaspora visitors during the festive period.

She added that the Task Force will involve key ministries and agencies, including those responsible for aviation, interior, and power, to ensure that Nigeria offers a seamless and world-class holiday experience.

We want to give the international community a reason to see Nigeria as a premier December destination, Musawa said.

This collaboration will also help maximize the economic potential of the season and strengthen our soft-power image globally.

Musawa noted that the government has adopted the Naija Season brand developed by the National Council for Arts and Culture as a year-round framework for promoting festivals, concerts, and cultural events across all 36 states.

The “Detty December phenomenon, which features music concerts, fashion shows, cultural festivals, and nightlife activities, has become a key driver of Nigeria’s creative economy.

Events such as the Calabar Carnival and Lagos’s major concerts attract thousands of local and international tourists, boosting revenue for hotels, airlines, and small businesses nationwide.
