Edo court grants activist Harrison Gwamnishu bail

BENIN-CITY: An Edo State High Court has granted bail to popular activist Harrison Gwamnishu, who has been in police detention since early December.

Gwamnishu was arrested following his involvement in ransom negotiations with abductors who kidnapped a young couple in Edo State. The kidnappers initially demanded ₦50 million, but after negotiations led by the activist who was reportedly contacted by the victims’ family the ransom was reduced to ₦20 million.

According to the family, the ₦20 million was handed over to Gwamnishu to deliver to the kidnappers. However, after the ransom was allegedly paid, the abductors claimed the amount was incomplete

They reportedly released the pregnant wife but held on to her husband.

Gwamnishu has denied any wrongdoing, insisting that he followed his usual method of dealing with kidnappers and had no intention of defrauding the family.

Following the incident, the family reported the matter to the police, leading to his arrest and detention.
