ASABA: Delta State Governor has showered accolades and substantial rewards on five outstanding students from the state who emerged World Champions at the World Basic School Debate competition held in Doha, Qatar.
The champions Ikhamateh Splendour, Otovo Uyoyouoghene, Wisdom Chibuzor Chukwuma, Abraham Honour, and Alika Daniel alongside their team handlers, were warmly received at Government House, Asaba, by the governor.
They were led by the National Coordinator of the Presidential School Debate Nigeria (PSDN), Elder Dare Oritu, who commended the students’ discipline, resilience, and brilliance throughout the global competition.
Speaking during the reception, the governor expressed pride in the team’s historic achievement, noting that their victory had once again placed Delta State on the world map for excellence beyond oil production, sports, and entertainment.
Our state is renowned for its contributions to different sectors, but education remains one of our most valued pillars. These students have shown the world that Delta has not just resources in its soil, but also rich talent in its young minds.
They are worthy ambassadors of our state, the governor said.
In recognition of their dedication, hard work, and the glory they brought home, the governor announced a ₦20 million cash prize for each of the five champions, totaling ₦100 million.
In addition, the team handlers received ₦20 million, bringing the total reward package to ₦120 million.
The governor also praised the parents, coaches, and handlers for their unwavering support, describing their role as vital in shaping the students’ academic and intellectual journey.
He stressed that the state government would continue to invest in academic competitions, talent grooming, and debate programmes to inspire other young Deltans to strive for excellence.
We are committed to creating more platforms for our young people to shine, both at home and internationally.
The success of these champions will motivate others to dream bigger, work harder, and aim for global recognition, he added.
The event ended with photo sessions, expressions of gratitude from the students, and a pledge from the debate team to keep representing Delta State with distinction in future competitions.
