WARRI: The political landscape in Delta State witnessed another major shift on Monday as the caretaker committee secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Michael Tidi, officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Tidi announced his defection during a ceremony held in Warri, stating that his decision followed what he described as a careful assessment of the political realities within the PDP in Delta State.
According to the former PDP chieftain, the opposition party no longer possesses the political strength required to win elections in the state. He explained that joining the APC provided an opportunity to reunite with longstanding political allies and contribute meaningfully to governance.
“I am here in the APC to contribute to the beautiful story,” Tidi declared, expressing satisfaction at reconnecting with political associates now aligned under the ruling party.
The former two-term Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area emphasized that unity with political friends and leaders influenced his decision to switch allegiance.
Leaders of the APC in Warri South warmly received Tidi into the party, describing his defection as a significant political gain.
Among those present were the Chairman of Warri South Local Government, Weyinmi Agbateyiniro; the APC Chairman in the local government, Richard Pessu; and the member representing Warri South Constituency I in the Delta State House of Assembly, Augustine Uroye.
In separate remarks, party leaders described Tidi’s move as a positive development capable of strengthening the APC’s grassroots structure ahead of future elections.
Tidi’s defection comes amid ongoing political realignments in Delta State following the recent move by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who was originally elected on the PDP platform but later defected to the APC alongside several prominent party leaders.
Political observers believe the latest development further signals shifting loyalties within Delta politics as parties reposition ahead of upcoming electoral contests in the state.
