LAGOS: At least six more fatalities have been confirmed in the aftermath of the fire outbreak at Afriland Towers, a six-storey commercial complex on Broad Street, Lagos Island.
The latest victims were employees of United Capital Plc, an investment and financial services company that occupied the 3rd and 4th floors of the building.
This update follows Wednesday’s announcement by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), which disclosed that four of its staff also died in the inferno. The new confirmation raises the total number of recorded deaths to 10.
The fire, which broke out around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the inverter room located in the basement, spread quickly, releasing thick smoke that engulfed several floors.
Panic-stricken occupants were seen scrambling for safety, with some attempting to escape through windows as firefighters fought to contain the flames.
Emergency responders from the Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other agencies rescued at least nine people. Five were revived on-site, while four remained unconscious.
Officials initially warned of possible fatalities, a fear now confirmed by United Capital’s statement.
It is with profound grief that the Management and Staff of United Capital Plc announce the passing of six of our dear colleagues following the tragic fire at Afriland Towers,” the company said Thursday morning.
Our departed colleagues were an integral part of our organisation. Their painful loss leaves an immeasurable void.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones. Preparations are underway for a memorial service to honour their lives.”
The statement also expressed appreciation to emergency services for their efforts, while pledging continued support for the bereaved families.
Although the official cause has not yet been confirmed, eyewitnesses said the blaze was triggered by an inverter explosion in the basement.
Both the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) were unavailable for further comments at the time of filing this report.
The Afriland Towers tragedy has drawn widespread condolences, with President Bola Tinubu and several corporate organisations extending sympathy to affected institutions, including FIRS, United Capital, and UBA.
