Asagba of Asaba to Engage Corporate Nigeria in Lagos Over Investment Opportunities

ASABA: The Asagba of Asaba, Epiphany Azinge, will host leading figures from corporate Nigeria in Lagos in a strategic engagement aimed at promoting investment opportunities and showcasing the economic potential of Asaba, the capital of Delta State.

The high-level event, scheduled for March 29 at Eko Hotel and Suites, is themed Asaba: The Strategic Gateway to Nigeria’s Next Economic Powerhouse. It is expected to bring together business executives, investors, policymakers and development partners to explore new economic opportunities in one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing urban centres.

According to the organisers, the meeting—described as “An Evening with Corporate Nigeria”—is designed to create a platform for dialogue, partnership and deal-making between stakeholders in the private sector and leaders driving the development of Asaba.

Promoting Asaba as an Emerging Economic Hub

Over the past decade, Asaba has experienced rapid transformation driven by urban expansion, population growth and infrastructure development. Its strategic location along the banks of the River Niger has positioned the city as a commercial bridge connecting Nigeria’s South-East, South-South and South-West regions.

With its proximity to major commercial cities such as Onitsha and improved road networks linking key economic corridors, Asaba has gradually evolved into a major service and logistics hub.

The forthcoming Lagos meeting will therefore highlight the city’s growing status as a centre for commerce, industry and real estate investment. Organisers say the event will provide investors with a comprehensive overview of development opportunities across sectors including infrastructure, real estate, tourism, agriculture and logistics.

The initiative also reflects a broader effort by the traditional institution to complement government-led development policies through strategic engagement with the private sector.

Asaba Waterfront City Project

One of the major investment opportunities expected to be unveiled during the engagement is the Asaba Waterfront City, an ambitious mixed-use development covering approximately 999,999 square metres along the River Niger.

The project is designed to transform a large stretch of the riverfront into a modern urban district featuring residential estates, commercial complexes, technology hubs, recreational facilities and tourism infrastructure.

Construction work on the development has already commenced, with completion projected between 2028 and 2030. When completed, the waterfront project is expected to significantly reshape the city’s skyline and attract high-value investments.

The project will also incorporate advanced urban planning systems including modern drainage and flood control mechanisms, smart infrastructure and eco-friendly design features aimed at ensuring environmental sustainability.

Urban planners believe the waterfront development could position Asaba among Nigeria’s most attractive investment destinations for real estate developers and international investors seeking emerging markets.

Infrastructure Expansion and Urban Development

The Asagba is also expected to present updates on several other strategic projects aimed at strengthening Asaba’s infrastructure and urban capacity.

Among them is the Asaba Ultra Modern Mall, a commercial development expected to expand retail and business opportunities within the city. The project is designed to cater to the growing middle-class population and the increasing influx of residents relocating to the state capital.

Another landmark project is the International Conference Centre, which is currently under construction and expected to become a major hub for conferences, exhibitions and business gatherings.

The complex will include a 1,500-seat auditorium, a 1,000-capacity ultramodern banquet hall, and 11 meeting rooms of varying sizes to accommodate conferences and corporate events. Additional support facilities such as restaurants, office spaces and a cultural centre are also planned within the complex.

Industry analysts say the development of such facilities is critical for attracting national and international conferences that could boost tourism, hospitality and business activities in the city.

Strengthening the Creative and Tourism Economy

The Lagos engagement will also highlight the growing influence of the creative industry in Asaba’s economic development.

Over the years, the city has emerged as one of Nigeria’s leading film production centres, hosting numerous Nollywood movie productions annually.

At the centre of this transformation is the Maryam Babangida Leisure Park and Film Village, which has become a major destination for filmmakers and tourists.

The facility, developed to support Nigeria’s film industry, provides studios, production locations and recreational facilities that attract actors, producers and directors from across the country.

Organisers say the Asagba will highlight the film village as Nigeria’s equivalent of global film production hubs such as Hollywood, while emphasising its potential to stimulate tourism and job creation.

Transport and Logistics Advantages

Asaba’s strategic advantages in transportation and logistics will also feature prominently during the engagement.

The operationalization of the Onitsha River Port is expected to significantly improve cargo movement across the Niger River corridor, facilitating trade between eastern and southern Nigeria.

Similarly, the continued expansion of Asaba International Airport has enhanced the city’s connectivity with major domestic and international destinations.

These transportation assets, combined with the city’s proximity to major commercial markets, are expected to strengthen Asaba’s role as a logistics gateway for trade and commerce.

Creating a Business-Friendly Environment

Another key focus of the monarch’s presentation will be the improvement of land administration and real estate development processes within Asaba.

The royal palace, working in collaboration with the state government, has introduced measures aimed at eliminating disputes and illegal practices associated with land acquisition.

According to the organizers, these reforms are designed to ensure that investors can acquire land without facing interference from illegal intermediaries or touts posing as agents.

The partnership between the traditional institution and the government has also helped create a transparent framework for land transactions, which is expected to encourage real estate development across the city.

Building Partnerships for Economic Growth

Beyond showcasing investment opportunities, the Lagos engagement is expected to serve as a platform for building long-term partnerships between Asaba and Nigeria’s business community.

The forum will bring together corporate leaders, financial institutions, development partners and policymakers to discuss strategies for accelerating economic growth and infrastructure development.

Observers say the initiative reflects a growing recognition of the role traditional institutions can play in promoting development by mobilising investment and fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors.

For Epiphany Azinge, a renowned legal scholar and former Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, the meeting represents an opportunity to position Asaba as a competitive investment destination in Nigeria’s evolving economic landscape.

With its expanding infrastructure, strategic location and improving business environment, the Delta State capital is increasingly attracting attention from investors looking to explore new opportunities within Nigeria’s emerging urban centres.

As the March 29 engagement approaches, expectations are rising that the interaction between the Asagba and corporate Nigeria will open new avenues for partnerships capable of accelerating the economic transformation of Asaba and the wider Delta State
