UYO: The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, has announced that the state is on track to commence international flight operations at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo,as part of efforts to strengthen aviation development and stimulate economic growth.
Governor Eno disclosed this on Tuesday while addressing Government House correspondents after inspecting the airport’s newly constructed neo-terminal and holding a review meeting with relevant stakeholders.
According to the governor, his administration is accelerating efforts to meet all operational and regulatory requirements outlined by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to ensure the successful launch of international flights from the airport.
He explained that although the project has recorded significant progress, a few technical gaps identified during the inspection are currently being addressed to meet global aviation standards.
To open an airport for international operations, every detail must be in place. Work is ongoing, and the few gaps identified are being closed, the governor stated.
Governor Eno acknowledged that the importation of specialised aviation equipment from abroad has caused minor delays but insisted that the overall timeline for the project remains intact.
He reassured residents that the state government remains committed to ensuring the airport meets all required safety and operational standards before the official launch of international services.
Some of the equipment needed is being imported from outside the country, which has caused slight delays. However, we are still on course, he said.
The governor also called on the Managing Director of Ibom Air, George Uriesi, to utilise his industry expertise to support the state’s broader vision of transforming the airport into a major regional aviation hub.
Ibom Air, the state-owned airline, currently operates domestic routes across Nigeria and is widely regarded as one of the country’s most efficient carriers.
Governor Eno expressed optimism that the commencement of international operations at the airport will significantly enhance connectivity between Akwa Ibom and the rest of the world.
He noted that the development would also attract foreign investment, boost tourism and strengthen the state’s position within Nigeria’s aviation sector.
Once operational, the international wing of Victor Attah International Airport is expected to serve as a strategic gateway for travellers and investors entering the South-South region.
Analysts say the move could further expand economic opportunities in the state while positioning Akwa Ibom as an emerging aviation and commercial hub in Nigeria.
