United Kingdom to Scrap Physical Visas, Introduce Mandatory eVisa System from Feb

LONDON: The United Kingdom has announced plans to discontinue the issuance of physical visa documents, replacing them with electronic visas (eVisas) effective February 25, 2026.

The development was disclosed by UK Visas and Immigration in a statement shared via X on Friday. According to the agency, travellers requiring visas will now receive only digital confirmation of their immigration status, which must be accessed through a UKVI online account before travel.

The UK authorities explained that an eVisa serves as a digital record of an individual’s identity and immigration status.

It contains details such as the type of visa granted, conditions attached to the stay, and whether the holder is permitted to work or study in the country.

Officials noted that the move continues the gradual replacement of physical immigration documents.

Biometric residence permits have already transitioned to digital records, and the new system will also phase out biometric residence cards as well as visa vignette stickers and passport stamps.

Travelers who successfully apply for UK entry clearance will automatically receive an eVisa. They will be able to view their status online, generate share codes to confirm immigration rights for employment or housing purposes, and update passport or travel document details before travelling.

The UK government added that setting up a UKVI account to access an eVisa is free of charge and is now essential for anyone requiring permission to enter the country.
