Labour Party Faction Submits New Leadership List to INEC

ABUJA: The Labour Party (LP) faction led by Senator Nenadi Usman has submitted a fresh 34-member Interim National Working Committee (INWC) list to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), deepening the party’s ongoing leadership crisis.

The list, jointly signed by Usman and interim National Secretary Darlington Nwokocha, was addressed to INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan and formally acknowledged by the commission on Friday, November 28, 2025. Usman signed the document as Interim National Chairman while Nwokocha signed as Interim National Secretary.

In the accompanying letter, the faction cited the Labour Party constitution, and a National Executive Council (NEC) resolution dated July 18, 2025, as the source of its authority. According to them, the NEC empowered their group to reconstitute the party’s interim national leadership.

They urged INEC to recognize the submitted list as the legitimate and authentic interim leadership of the party.

We are pleased to forward the names and designations of the reconstituted members of the Interim National Leadership, in line with the LP constitution and the statutory NEC resolutions of July 18, 2025, Usman wrote.

She noted that INEC had previously acknowledged the NEC resolution in correspondence dated July 21, 2025.

She added that the NEC authorised the interim leadership to complete the composition of the national leadership structure in accordance with Article 13 of the party’s constitution.

The faction emphasised that the new list replaces an earlier abridged version submitted in August, as well as the rival list sent to INEC by the faction led by Julius Abure.

The development came just a day after Abure held a separate NEC meeting attended by INEC officials and former vice-presidential candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed during which he reaffirmed himself as national chairman.

Usman and Nwokocha’s faction is backed by prominent figures including Abia State Governor Alex Otti, 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and other key stakeholders.

The updated 34-member list features several key positions, including Deputy National Chairman (TUC) Mohammed Misau, Deputy National Chairman (Female) Mrs. Nike Oriola, and Deputy National Chairman (NLC) Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku.

With both factions presenting competing leadership structures to INEC, the Labour Party’s internal conflict appears far from resolved, leaving the commission to manage yet another party dispute ahead of the next election cycle.
