The statement read, “The Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town, Delta State, wishes to announce with deep sorrow the passing of Chief (Dr.) Sen. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark OFR, CON on Monday, 17th February 2025. The family appreciates the prayers and condolences of friends, associates, and well-wishers during this difficult time. Further details will be communicated by the family in due course.”

Chief Clark was an influential leader, widely recognized as a staunch advocate for both regional and national unity. His commitment to peacebuilding, particularly in the Niger Delta region, was well known. He often took on the role of a mediator in resolving conflicts between warring communities and political factions, earning respect and admiration for his efforts to maintain stability in the region.

In October 2024, Clark demonstrated his continued dedication to fostering unity when he established a committee aimed at reconciling Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State with his former political godfather, Nyesom Wike. This initiative was led by former Akwa Ibom Governor Obong Victor Attah, who served as the committee’s Co-Chairman, representing the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) Board of Trustees.

Chief Clark’s passing comes at a poignant time, just days after the death of another revered Nigerian statesman, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, leader of Afenifere, the prominent pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group. Both Clark and Adebanjo were pillars of Nigerian politics and development, consistently championing the cause of a better and more united Nigeria.

Together with other patriotic leaders, they participated in the Greater Nigeria Conference held in Abuja in 2022, which was convened to discuss the emergence of the next Nigerian President from the South-East. Their collective efforts aimed at advancing a progressive political agenda for the country.

Furthermore, in November 2023, Clark and other esteemed leaders, including Adebanjo, renewed their call for the restructuring of Nigeria to create a true federal structure. They strongly advocated for the adoption and full implementation of the 2014 National Conference report, believing it contained vital solutions to the nation’s political and socio-economic challenges.

Chief Edwin Clark’s passing marks the loss of a dedicated public servant and a distinguished voice in the ongoing dialogue for a more just and united Nigeria. His legacy as a peacebuilder, advocate for unity, and statesman will undoubtedly endure for generations to come.
