Police Arrest 24-Year-Old Suspected Arms Courier in Lagos, Recover Pistol, Ammunition

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old man suspected of transporting illegal firearms following a stop-and-search operation at Iyana Isashi in Lagos State.

The suspect, identified as Lukman Sanni, was reportedly apprehended by police operatives during a security operation aimed at preventing the movement of illegal weapons and curbing criminal activities across the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed the arrest in a statement issued on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

According to the police, a search conducted on the suspect following his arrest led to the recovery of a locally made pistol, two live cartridges and an item suspected to be a charm.

The command said the arrest formed part of its ongoing efforts to tackle illegal possession and trafficking of firearms, as well as other security threats across Lagos.

The police disclosed that preliminary investigations had commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding Sanni’s possession of the recovered firearm and ammunition.

Investigators are also working to determine the intended destination of the weapon, the purpose for which it was being transported and whether other individuals were connected to the suspected illegal arms movement.

The command stated that the suspect remained in police custody and was providing useful information to assist the investigation.

However, the police have yet to disclose whether the suspect was allegedly transporting the firearm for personal use, delivering it to another individual or acting on behalf of a wider criminal network.

The investigation is expected to establish the origin of the locally made pistol and determine whether the recovered ammunition is connected to any planned criminal activity.

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, reiterated the command’s determination to combat illegal possession of firearms, arms trafficking, cultism and other criminal activities.

He emphasised the importance of public cooperation in addressing security challenges, urging residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements and activities to the authorities.

According to the command, credible information from members of the public remains an important tool in maintaining peace, preventing crime and supporting police operations.

The police also encouraged residents to avoid handling suspicious packages or confronting suspected criminals themselves, advising them to report relevant information through established emergency channels.

To strengthen communication with residents, the Lagos State Police Command provided emergency telephone numbers through which members of the public can report suspicious activities and security emergencies.

The numbers released by the command are:

  • 07061019374
  • 08065154338
  • 08063299264
  • 08039344870
  • 08080193432 (Marine)
  • 09168630929

The command urged residents to make responsible use of the emergency lines and provide timely information that could assist security agencies in preventing criminal activities.

The arrest comes amid continuing security concerns over the circulation of illegal firearms and their potential use in violent crimes, including armed robbery, cult-related violence and other criminal activities.

Although the police have not established any connection between Sanni and a wider criminal organisation, investigators are expected to examine all relevant leads as they work to determine the circumstances surrounding the recovered weapon.

The suspect’s arrest underscores the importance of intelligence gathering, routine security checks and public cooperation in efforts to prevent illegal weapons from circulating within Lagos State.

The police have not announced any further arrests in connection with the incident as investigations continue.
