A quiet Michigan community has been left in shock after a man allegedly shot and killed his wife and their six children before taking his own life, with investigators saying the family’s home was later deliberately set on fire in an apparent attempt to conceal the crime.
The victims Kristopher Karolkiewicz, his wife Amanda Mandy Karolkiewicz, and their six children aged between 5 and 15 years were found dead inside their burning residence in Grand Haven Township, near the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, on Friday, July 24, 2026.
According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department, autopsies determined that all eight family members died from gunshot wounds. Investigators concluded that Kristopher Karolkiewicz fatally shot his wife and six children before taking his own life.
Sheriff Eric DeBoer described the incident as an unimaginable tragedy. This is an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand,” the sheriff said in a statement read during a news conference.
Investigators said the fire that engulfed the family’s home appears to have been deliberately started in multiple locations after the killings.
Officials explained that emergency responders initially received reports of a smoky smell in the area but were unable to locate the source. After additional calls were received several hours later, firefighters returned, discovered smoke rising from the Karolkiewicz residence, and found the victims inside, with some of the bodies located in bedrooms. The family’s dogs and at least one cat also perished in the blaze.
Authorities continue to investigate the exact sequence of events and the origin of the fire.
Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, worked as a substitute elementary school teacher and was widely remembered for her compassion and dedication to children.
In a statement, her mother and stepfather, Becky and Steve Lawwill, described her as “a kind and devoted soul who loved her family and her students.”
“We treasured every moment we had with her and her six children, and words cannot adequately address our devastation,” they said, adding that they were praying for strength as they mourned the family’s loss.
The local school district also paid tribute, noting that Amanda consistently went above and beyond to support students, especially those facing difficult circumstances, with empathy, patience, and care.
Authorities disclosed that Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, had served as a Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the American Heart Association from September 2023 until earlier this month, when his employment ended.
The organization confirmed his previous role but declined to comment further, citing personnel privacy policies. It stated that he worked remotely in a division responsible for CPR and first aid training and products.
The couple met while working at a beverage company in 2008 and married the following year.
Amanda chronicled their family life in a parenting blog, where she frequently wrote about her Christian faith, motherhood, and gratitude for her husband. The couple welcomed three biological sons before adopting two daughters and later having another son, raising a family of six children.
Although the blog ended in 2016, Amanda continued sharing moments from family life on TikTok, including videos from a recent trip to China with two of their children. Her family had previously experienced tragedy in 2020 when her adult stepbrother died from a fentanyl overdose.
Friends of Amanda’s parents have launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses and establish a scholarship in memory of the six children. Grand Haven Township, where the tragedy occurred, is a community of approximately 18,000 residents located about 30 minutes west of Grand Rapids.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the motive behind one of Michigan’s deadliest family tragedies in recent years.
