BENIN-CITY: Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has urged residents to remain united and committed to building a stronger, more prosperous and economically vibrant state as Edo marks 35 years of statehood.
Okpebholo made the call in a goodwill message to Edo citizens as the state commemorated its 35th anniversary, describing the milestone as a celebration of unity, resilience and collective progress.
Edo State was created on August 27, 1991, following its separation from the former Bendel State.
The governor said the anniversary provided an opportunity for the people to reflect on the state’s achievements, consolidate existing gains and renew their commitment to its future development.
According to him, Edo has deep cultural roots, significant economic potential and a population capable of driving sustainable growth.
Edo’s 35 years represent both an achievement and a responsibility. We inherit a state with deep cultural roots, economic potential and people with proven capacity. Our task is to translate these assets into tangible improvements in the lives of Edo citizens,” he said.
The governor said his administration had strengthened collaboration with security agencies as part of efforts to tackle criminal activities and improve safety across the state.
He also identified healthcare as a key priority, saying the government was upgrading medical facilities and investing in the training of health workers, particularly those serving in primary healthcare centres.
Okpebholo maintained that improving healthcare delivery remained essential to enhancing the quality of life of residents and strengthening the state’s human capital.
On education, the governor said his administration had increased funding support for Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, and Edo State University, Uzairue, as part of efforts to strengthen the institutions and improve teaching and learning.
He also disclosed that the government had commenced the recruitment of teachers to address manpower shortages in public schools.
According to him, the move is aimed at improving access to quality education and ensuring that schools across the state have adequate teaching personnel.
The governor also highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects across Edo State.
He said road rehabilitation was continuing in different parts of the state, while construction work was progressing on the first flyovers at Ikpoba Hill and Sapele Road in Benin City.
He added that his administration was implementing urban renewal projects designed to improve the appearance, functionality and economic value of major cities and communities.
Okpebholo further disclosed that his administration was taking steps to expand power generation and improve electricity supply to households, businesses and industries.
He specifically cited the 100-megawatt power project at Ologbo and related energy infrastructure being developed at the Taihu Industrial Park.
The governor said the projects would increase Edo’s power capacity and provide a more dependable electricity supply for industrial activities.
According to him, improving energy availability would help reduce one of the major constraints facing businesses, attract fresh investments, support existing industries and create employment opportunities for residents.
“Reliable energy is critical to industrialization and economic growth. We will continue to support investments that expand power generation and create the infrastructure required for businesses to thrive in Edo,” he said.
As the state marks 35 years of its creation, Okpebholo commended Edo citizens, previous administrations, traditional institutions, the private sector and other stakeholders for their contributions to the development of the state.
He urged residents to continue supporting efforts aimed at moving Edo forward, stressing that sustainable development required cooperation and collective responsibility.
“This anniversary is an opportunity for introspection and recommitment. Edo’s future depends on our collective will to do the work not in slogans, but in concrete action,” the governor said.
Okpebholo also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to accelerating development through its SHINE Agenda, while calling on Edo citizens to remain united in pursuit of a stronger and more prosperous state.
