Ohanaeze Praises Tinubu for Swift Action on Benin–Agbor–Asaba Expressway

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his swift intervention over the deteriorating condition of the Benin–Agbor–Asaba Expressway.

The organisation described the highway as a critical national transportation corridor linking the South-South and Southeast with other parts of Nigeria, stressing its importance to commerce, transportation and economic activities.

In a statement issued by its Deputy President General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze acknowledged the difficulties motorists, transport operators and other road users have faced as a result of the poor condition of the highway.

According to the organisation, prolonged delays, severe traffic congestion, vehicle damage and longer travel times have placed significant pressure on commuters who depend on the road.

Ohanaeze urged motorists, transport operators and residents along the corridor to remain calm and patient, expressing confidence that the Federal Government’s intervention would lead to the restoration of the road to an acceptable standard.

Ohanaeze commends Umahi’s inspection

The Igbo sociocultural organisation also praised the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, for responding promptly to the presidential directive and personally inspecting the affected section of the highway.

It noted that Umahi’s on-site assessment of the Benin–Asaba corridor on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, demonstrated the seriousness attached to addressing the challenges confronting road users.

Ohanaeze said the road’s strategic importance could not be overstated, describing it as an essential economic route for the movement of people, agricultural produce, industrial goods and other commercial activities across Nigeria.

“The organisation recognises the strategic importance of the road as a vital economic route that supports the movement of people, agricultural produce, industrial goods, and commercial activities across the country,” the statement said.

The group maintained that the concerns raised by motorists and transport operators were genuine and deserved the urgent attention currently being given to the corridor by the Federal Government.

Group backs Umahi’s approach to road projects

Ohanaeze further commended Umahi for what it described as his disciplined and performance-driven approach to infrastructure development.

According to the organisation, the minister’s emphasis on project supervision, accountability, quality and timely delivery has strengthened public confidence in the government’s efforts to address Nigeria’s infrastructure challenges.

It also praised his insistence that contractors should meet agreed project standards, describing the approach as necessary for ensuring that road rehabilitation and construction projects deliver lasting value.

The group said the minister’s inspection of the Benin–Agbor–Asaba corridor following Tinubu’s directive was an indication that the Federal Government was treating the condition of the highway as an urgent national concern.

Ohanaeze expressed optimism that the combined efforts of the Presidency and Ministry of Works would result in a sustainable solution to the problems affecting the major highway.

The Benin–Agbor–Asaba route remains an important link between communities and commercial centres in Edo and Delta states and serves as a major connection between the South-South and Southeast regions.

The organisation therefore urged all stakeholders, including contractors, government agencies, motorists and host communities, to support efforts aimed at restoring the highway and ensuring its long-term maintenance.
