Chinese National Arrested in Nigerian Military Counter-Terrorism Operation

ABUJA: In a major development in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against terrorism, troops from Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have successfully arrested a Chinese national, allegedly posing as a miner, during a series of counter-terrorism operations conducted in Borno and Yobe States.

This was disclosed by Major General Markus Kangye, the Director of Defence Media Operations, during a press briefing held in Abuja on Friday, June 13, 2025.

The Chinese suspect was apprehended in Kukawa and Ngala Local Government Areas of Borno State. According to the military, the individual claimed to be a miner, but his presence in a known terrorist hotbed raised suspicions.

He is currently being detained and interrogated to determine:

  • His actual motive for being in the region

  • Possible links to terrorist groups such as Boko Haram or ISWAP

  • Whether he acted alone or had accomplices

  • Involvement in illegal mining or smuggling activities The Chinese national has been detained and is undergoing intensive interrogation, said Major General Kangye. We will release more information to the public once the investigations are concluded.

Major General Kangye also revealed that from June 6 to June 11, a significant number of Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists including men, women, and children surrendered to the military in response to the increased operational pressure in the region.

This development highlights the effectiveness of Nigeria’s renewed counter-insurgency efforts, especially in the northeastern part of the country, which has long been plagued by terrorist activity.

The Nigerian Armed Forces are intensifying operations across all regions of the country to tackle ongoing security challenges. These include:

  • Terrorist insurgencies in the North East

  • Banditry in the North West

  • Kidnappings and militancy in other parts of the country Kangye emphasized the military’s unwavering commitment to ensuring national stability, protecting lives and property, and upholding democratic values.

  • We are fully committed to transparency, security, and national peace, he stated. We will continue to keep Nigerians updated on the success of our operations.
