ZAFARA STATE: The Zafara state has announced the death of about forty persons on Saturday in a boat mishap in Gummi town, the headquarters of Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The Director of Emergency at the Zamfara State Emergency Management Agency (ZEMA), Hassan Dauran, made this known rapidospace news online platform. He said the boat was carrying about 50 passengers when the tragic accident happened.
At the moment, only few people has been rescued alive, while the majority of the passengers, mostly women and children could not make it alive, said Dauran.
According to an eyewitness story, the deceased people were on their way to their farms early on Saturday morning when the boat capsized and fell into the river.
According to the eyewitness, out of the 53 farmers, 12 children, the boat’s captain—were retrieved alive, while the other 41 were declared dead.
The Emir of Gummi retired Justice Hassan Lawal, has offered his condolences to the families of the deceased victims of the Saturday deadly event.He called the incident “tragic” and prayed to Allah for the strength to console the relatives of the deceased and for forgiveness for all those who lost their lives.
Similarly, on August 8, five persons died in a canoe accident in Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The tragedy occurred when a boat in Nahuce village, carrying twenty passengers, capsized while crossing the Gamoda River.
Also, on July 8, an unprecedented boat accident occurred on the Kwalgai River in the Auyo Local Government Area of Jigawa State, reportedly resulting in the rescue of eighteen people and the death of one person.
