The residents of Okpoama village in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State have slaughtered a massive whale that washed ashore. The whale, measuring approximately 15 meters in length, 5 meters in width, and about 3 meters in height, was discovered on the beach Wednesday morning, already deceased.
It’s believed the fish could have arrived at excessive tide on Tuesday night time and was left on shore when the ocean water receded throughout low tide.
Mr. Tarinyo Akono, informed rapidospace on Wednesday that “they’re butchering the whale,” saying folks have been utilizing machetes, hacksaws and axes to chop the animal into items.
Akono, a former state president of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Bayelsa State Council, who is indigenous to the area, said the whale was found dead after being stranded out of the water overnight.
Additionally, Seiyefa Felix Ben-Basuo, the youth president of Okpoama, has confirmed that people were indeed killing the whale on the beach.
This event likely raises environmental and conservation concerns, as whales are protected species globally, and their killing or stranding can have ecological implications.
