LONDON: Bola Tinubu on Wednesday commenced his official state visit to the United Kingdom, receiving a ceremonial welcome from King Charles III at Windsor Castle.
The Nigerian leader arrived alongside the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, marking the start of a two-day diplomatic visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and the UK.
The royal reception took place in the Quadrangle at Windsor Castle, where the president and the First Lady were formally welcomed by King Charles III and Queen Camilla with full ceremonial honours.
The event featured a colourful display of British royal tradition, including members of the Household Cavalry and the Grenadier Guards who participated in the ceremonial parade.
A carriage procession then conveyed the visiting Nigerian delegation to Windsor Castle following the formal welcome.
During the ceremony, Tinubu and King Charles III travelled together in the historic Australian State Coach, while Queen Camilla and the Nigerian First Lady rode in the Scottish State Coach.
Members of the public gathered along the route in Windsor to witness the historic moment and wave at the presidential convoy.
Earlier, the Nigerian president and his wife were also greeted by Prince William, the Prince of Wales, and Catherine, Princess of Wales at the Fairmont Hotel in Windsor.
The royal couple exchanged pleasantries with Tinubu and the First Lady before the official state welcome commenced.
The encounter formed part of the formal programme organised to mark the Nigerian president’s visit to the United Kingdom.
Following the ceremonial welcome, the Nigerian delegation joined members of the British royal family to view a special exhibition of items from the Royal Collection related to Nigeria.
The display, hosted within the Green Drawing Room at Windsor Castle, highlights historical artefacts and documents reflecting the longstanding ties between Nigeria and Britain.
Strengthening Diplomatic Relations
Tinubu’s visit is expected to focus on strengthening cooperation between both countries in key areas including trade, investment, infrastructure development, and economic partnerships.
Nigeria and the United Kingdom share deep historical, economic and diplomatic ties, and the state visit is seen as an opportunity to deepen collaboration on issues ranging from commerce to security cooperation.
The visit also underscores ongoing diplomatic engagement between the Nigerian government and the British monarchy.
Officials say discussions during the visit may also address economic cooperation, development initiatives and other areas of mutual interest between the two countries.
The Nigerian president is scheduled to continue engagements with British officials and stakeholders during the remainder of the visit.
