Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has disclosed that the state workers will be paid the sum of N85,000 minimum wage, which is N15,000 higher than the Federal Government approved N70,000 in July
The new N70,000 minimum wage bill was signed into law in July by president Bola Tinubu ending months of deliberations between government representatives, labour unions and the private sector.
At his Wednesday presence as a guest on Politics Today on Channels Television, Sanwo-Olu stated that the state isn’t spending N85,000 in order to surpass others but rather because it has the capacity to.
Sanwo-Olu stated on the program, “I’m happy to inform you that the minimum wage for Lagos, which we talked about and discussed with our union, is N85,000 today.
I am not going to say we pay more than some other people because it’s not a competition; it’s a function.
The governor also disclosed that the state has raised worker salaries earlier in the year, and he expressed his desire to be able to earn the N100,000 minimum wage in January 2025.
In fact, we raised salaries earlier.”Earlier in the year, we paid employees merit-based pay increases, and we want to keep doing so.

Not to make anyone look bad, but because I really want my people to have a living wage and to really be able to know that government is working for them, I would like to come back to you in January and say I have been able to increase the minimum wage of Lagos to N100,000,” he said.
There is affordability and it depends on capability, but we are well aware that living in Lagos comes with a premium, especially when it comes to its cost of living.
