The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun’s successor, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved the promotion of 17,952 junior police officers across Nigeria in a move aimed at rewarding diligence, improving personnel welfare and strengthening professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.
The nationwide promotion exercise, announced on Saturday, affects officers serving in various commands and formations across the country.
According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Anthony Okon Placid, the promoted officers comprise 165 sergeants elevated to the rank of inspector, 73 corporals promoted to sergeant, and 17,714 constables advanced to the rank of corporal.
The police hierarchy described the exercise as part of ongoing efforts to motivate personnel and enhance operational effectiveness across the force.
IGP Disu said timely promotion remains a vital component of the Force’s human resource management strategy, noting that recognising deserving officers encourages dedication, loyalty and excellence in service.
He explained that the latest promotion exercise reflects the commitment of the current police leadership to merit-based career progression, institutional development and improved welfare for officers.
According to him, rewarding hard work and professionalism is essential to building a more efficient and service-oriented police force capable of meeting modern security challenges.
The Inspector-General congratulated the newly promoted officers and urged them to see their elevation as a call to greater responsibility rather than merely a reward.
He charged the beneficiaries to uphold the core values of the Nigeria Police Force by demonstrating professionalism, discipline, integrity and respect for human rights in the discharge of their duties.
Disu also emphasised the importance of adhering to the rule of law and maintaining the highest standards of policing as the officers assume their new ranks and responsibilities.
The promotion is not just an advancement in rank but a recognition of commitment to duty and service to the nation. Officers must continue to exhibit exemplary conduct and dedication to the protection of lives and property,” the police chief said.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to recognising excellence, rewarding hard work and creating opportunities for career advancement within the organisation.
The Force further stated that the promotion exercise aligns with broader reforms aimed at strengthening institutional capacity, improving personnel motivation and enhancing public confidence in law enforcement.
Security analysts have long argued that regular promotions and improved welfare packages are crucial to boosting morale among security personnel and improving service delivery.
The latest development is expected to encourage officers across the country while reinforcing the police leadership’s commitment to building a more professional, accountable and effective force.
With nearly 18,000 officers benefiting from the exercise, it represents one of the largest promotion drives within the Nigeria Police Force in recent years and underscores ongoing efforts to improve workforce motivation and operational efficiency.
